The artist has marked this proof prior to its finalization as a plate for engraving. Both Redouté and Saint-Hilaire formed part of Napoléon’s scientific corps in Egypt. Saint-Hilaire went on to become a general, fighting at Austerlitz, Eylau, and other decisive battles.
