Preparatory study for the Imperial eagle

At Napoléon’s coronation, the single-headed eagle became the symbol of the French Empire, helping to brand his sovereignty. The eagle was the symbol of Imperial Rome and has been associated with military victory since antiquity. This was a design for one of the Emperor’s carriages.
