Medici-style vases
Louis-François Jeannest - c. 1811-1812
With the demand for bronze to cast cannons, large-scale artworks in this alloy of tin and copper were rarely made during the time. These two are the only known bronze vases of the period on this scale. Depicted in a classical motif, they represent Napoléon’s marriage to Marie-Louise and the King of Rome’s birth in 1811. Napoléon’s eagle, bee and heroic symbolism feature prominently, as well.
