A blood chit is a type of document issued to military personnel operating in or near enemy territory or in situations where they may be captured or lost.The concept of blood chits dates back to before World War II, when they were used to help downed pilots or soldiers who found themselves behind enemy lines. The term 'blood chit' originated in British India. Many U.S. flight crews had their "blood chit" sewn to the back of their flight jackets. Some units added the blood chit to the crew's flight suits while other units gave the blood chit out only for specific flights.A chit includes translations in multiple languages to facilitate communication with local populations. It identifies the bearer as American and friendly, and requests assistance, food, and shelter. Also promising anyone who finds them and provides such assistance, a reward for their help.This Vietnam War era blood chit is printed in English, Vietnamese, Chinese, and 8 other Asian languages, in addition to French and Dutch, which were still spoken by some in their old Colonial holdings.
