1913 WOLVERHAMPTON, Thomas Clarkson & Sons, 48 Snow Hill, Cabinet Makers etc. An Attractive original bill head showing shop fronts at 26 & 48-49 Snow Hill, the firm established in 1840 Thomas Clarkson & Sons have been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in London in 1640. In 1755, Hewitt Clarkson moved the business to Cock Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The family continued to trade there successfully, manufacturing long-case antique clocks. In about 1780, the business moved to Dudley Street, later known as Snow Hill, in Wolverhampton.
In 1840, in response to the declining popularity of long-case antique clocks, the family founded a antique furniture business at Snow Hill. In 1871, it acquired the freehold of the premises and sold out in 1960. Thomas Clarkson & Son Wolverhampton - formerly part of Army & Navy group which House of Fraser purchased in 1973. The store was rebranded in 1976. :
