This particular case was the second one to be marketed by the Pompeian Co. Up until that point, they had not produced a full-size compact case. This one, the one selected to be produced, features an ornate stamped design showing a woman holding a burning lamp with tendrils of smoke and her flowing gown surrounding her. It was manufactured by Scovill Co. and was distinguished by the fitting of a positive spring catch that is released by pressing a small round button.

It was given the name "VOTIVE OFFERING" and was a representation of Retro Art Nouveau just before the dawning of the Art Deco movement.

With the success of over 25 years, in 1927, the Pompeian Co. located in Cleveland, OH, was acquired by the Colgate Company.

This case has an inside mirror and is marked inside with the pat. pend. date of Apr 24 - Aug 14, 1917. On the bottom of the compact, pressed into the brass metal are the words POMPEIAN BEAUTY POWDER COMPACT and THE POMPEIAN CO. CLEVELAND OH. It truly is an authentic piece of the Fashion & Beauty Industry of its time.
