I HAVE A HUGE COLLECTION OF MOLDAVITE AND LIBYAN GLASS. BEEN COLLECTING FOR 40 YEARS. I AM LETTING SOME OF MY NICEST PIECES OUT OF MY COLLECTION GO. IT HAS SUPER NICE COLOR TOO, IT DOES HAVE SOME TINY NICK\'S HERE AND THERE. I WILL BE PUTTING UP A BUNCH MORE OF THIS AND LIBYAN GLASS THIS WEEK. IT IS A HAIR UNDER 3/4 INCHES LONG (19MM) AND ABOUT 11/16THS INCHES WIDE (18MM) ALL NATURAL. WEIGHTS IN AT A 7.2 GRAMS, OR 36 CARAT WEIGHT! IT IS A VERY UNIQUE AND COOL PIECE! DURABLE AND HEAVY DUTY ( WOULD MAKE A VERY NICE POCKET STONE) AND INCREDIBLY COLORED. IT IS THE BOTTOM 1/2 OF A TEARDROP SHAPED PIECE. IT IS BASICALLY ROUND OR DOME SHAPED, AND FLAT (NICE FOR DISPLAY) ON THE TOP EDGE. IT IS AN OLD BREAK BECAUSE IT IS NOT SHINY BUT WORN AND DULL LOOKING. Tektites are formed by the impact of a large meteorite or comet nuclei with the earth\'s surface. The earth\'s surface at the impact site melts into a glass becoming the tektites. Not all impacts form tektites, in fact most known craters do not have tektites associated with them. A number of special circumstances are required before tektites are formed. Tektites, which have been found on every continent, are usually tar black or blackish brown, while Moldavites, which are to be found mainly in the Moldau river valley in Czechoslovakia, are a deep green color. The area around the Ries Crater, in Germany, is the source for all Moldavites -- the age of the crater, 14.7 million years old, is identical with the age of Moldavite. Moldavites are by far the most beautiful of the tektites and are the only known gemstone of extraterrestrial origin. Moldavites have always been a highly prized material due to the incredible emerald green color, and the fact that they are even more rare than diamonds, rubies, or emeralds. Since their origin is due to an impact event, further discovery of new deposits seems very unlikely.
