Very rare Dutch Staten-Bijbel - Gouda, 1647 Rammazeyn, 'Pirate-print' - in 'museum-category' leather binding , with original brass fittings
Rare 'pirate print' or 'Roofdruk' from 1647.

The States General had granted an exclusive right to their 'in-house printer' of Ravesteyn for a period of 15 years. The States hoped in this way to retain some control over the text for which a lot of time had been taken during the Synod of Dordrecht.
The printers in the most powerful 17th century major cities ignored this exclusive patent from the States General and took a profit. After all, there was great demand for Staten Bibles.For the Gouda printers, this adventure ended unfortunately in bankruptcy. Yet a beautiful Gouda state Bible was born, after editions were printed in Amsterdam and Dordrecht.
This work is sold 'S.W.A.F.'Defects have been photographed as much as possible.Engraved title-page in copy. Paper damage without loss of text in the front. The last page of the third book of the machabees is missing at the back.Endpapers renewed with handmade paper.Original fittings.
A short history on 17th century PIRATE PRINTS of the famous dutch ‘statenbijbel’ After two years of ample deliberations over the right bible texts (synode van Dordrecht 1618/1619 ) the states of Holland Zeeland etc gave an exclusive privilage ( for the duration of 15 years) tot their housprinter the Ravensteyn family. The exclusive privilage made the family wealthy. The other big Dutch printing houses, expecially in the city of Amsterdam and later on in Dordrecht and Gouda were upset and angry about the fact that they were excluded from the profitable print of a ‘Statenbijbel’. They regarded this exclusive privilage as 'bread-robbery'. The term ‘roof-bijbel’ emerged. The demand in the low countries for a Dutch bible in the circles of reformed Protestants was enormous. So a few daring large printing houses ignored the exclusive right of the van Ravensteyn printing house and backed up by the governers of their powerfull cities they stepped into the adventure of printing , thus ignoring the decrete of the Staten van Holland, Zeeland etc. The bibles that saw the light without the specific consent of the Staten were called a pirateprint. The pirates couldn’t care less. The Staten van Holland Zeeland etc, gave the exclusive right tot heir houseprinter hoping this way they could keep a firm grip on the texts. The deliberations were ended by Prins Maurtis of Orange. He took sides with the hardliners well knowing that in these circles their money was important to finance his revolt against the Spaniards. To compete with the van Raventeyn printing house these pirates delivered top typographic work and offered their customers to insert exclusive( Plancius ) Maps. These maps are considered ass the top in geographical maps in Dutch 17th century bibles. Every no and than pirate-bibles 'pop up' and are offered tot collectors worldwide.
Despite the listed flaws, an impressive and beautiful piece.
