Thomas signed this Autograph Letter to fellow Deputy Marshal Sisson in 1900, requesting a second warrant for the arrest of John Trimble. Sisson signed an autograph note on verso requesting more information, and Thomas signed a reply to that query.
Autograph Letter signed twice: "Heck Thomas", 2 pages (front and verso), 8x10½. Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory, 1900 October 24. On letterhead of the Office of the U.S. Marshal to Marshal N. E. Sisson, Guthrie, O. T. In full: "Please allow me to send for another warrant for John Trimble. I have warrant 5281 for him issued at Guthrie. He is a hard man & I would rather have the enclosed warrant when I make the arrest. Will you kindly fasten all the papers in Trimble warrant together. I enclose warrant issued here. [Additional items mentioned are not included.] Please have it approved & docketed & also the one I enclose for Ted DeGarner. All are sure cases. Respectfully yours. [signature] I will return all subpoenas served tomorrow from [?] O.T. Autograph Note signed on verso: "Sisson": "Heck - You do not say whether offense described in new warrant is a different offense from that described in warrant #5281. If the same, return #5281 & I will have the new one approved. If different, let me know that fact & return papers. Yours truly". Another autograph note follows, signed "Heck Thomas". Anadarko, O.T., 1900 October 29. In full: "Dear Sir, This is an entirely different offense and you can see from items outside that I have other cases against him. Respectfully yours". HENRY "HECK" THOMAS (1850-1912), a deadly frontier lawman employed by "hanging judge" Isaac Parker, was responsible for arresting over 300 outlaws between 1893-1896 and cleaning up a dangerous zone known as "Hell's Half Acre." He killed notorious outlaw Bill Doolin and shot another, Ned Christie. He was numbered with Bill Tilghman and Chris Madsen as one of the "Three Guardsmen" promoting law and order in the territory. NED E. SISSON was another deputy U.S. Marshal, posted at Guthrie (1898-1902). Although his duties seem to have been mostly administrative, he worked with Heck Thomas and Bill Tilghman to apprehend mob leaders who had lynched two Seminole Indians falsely accused of rape. He also let a prisoner escape while transporting him for trial in Norman, Oklahoma. In 1902, Sisson became Clerk of the 5th Judicial Court. Normal mailing folds. Green pencil note at lower left margin page 1. Lightly creased. Very minor foxing on front. Otherwise, fine condition.
