I surmise that the sterling silver band was added some years after the pipe was made, possibly to commemorate an important milestone. I read the stamping on the band as, \"F.D.\'22\". The style of the pipe, the amber stem w/ orific bit, and the case, strongly suggest this pipe was made in the 1800s. I have not ever separated the stem from the stummel, as I was too concerned with injuring the pipe. It has been in my regular rotation for some time. I have no problem cleaning it, as a pipe cleaner can easily find its way from the bit to the chamber. I have kept it meticulously clean. The case is in outstanding shape!
