About Mary Blair:

Mary Blair was a celebrated American artist, animator, and designer. She made significant contributions to the Walt Disney Company and left an indelible mark on the animation industry.

Education


Born in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1911, Mary Robinson developed a passion for art early on. Her supportive parents encouraged her artistic pursuits, even sacrificing their own needs to provide her with art supplies. In 1929, she enrolled at San Jose State University (then San Jose State College) with the aspiration of becoming an art teacher. During her time at the university, she actively exhibited her work and gained recognition for her talent. Her charcoal drawing was featured in the annual Pacific Art Association exhibition in Fresno, and she was even featured in the San Jose Mercury Herald in 1931.

Early Career

After graduating in 1933, Mary moved to Los Angeles, where she continued to hone her artistic skills. She attended Chouinard Art Institute, studying under renowned artists such as Pruett Carter, Morgan Russell, and Lawrence Murphy. Graduating in 1933, she married fellow artist Lee Blair, and together they became members of the California School of Watercolor. In 1940, Mary Blair\'s career took a pivotal turn when she joined Walt Disney Studios. Her first major project was the groundbreaking film Fantasia. Her unique artistic style, characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, and a playful sense of whimsy, resonated with Walt Disney, who became a strong supporter of her work.

Mary\'s contributions to Disney films were instrumental in shaping their visual identity. She played a significant role in the creation of concept art for films such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Song of the South. Freelance Career

In 1953, Mary left Disney to pursue her freelance career. She continued to illustrate children\'s books, including the renowned Little Golden Books. Her artwork graced the pages of stories like I Can Fly, The Golden Book of Stories, and The Golden Book of Songs.

Mary\'s freelance work extended beyond children\'s literature. She designed for television shows, theatrical productions, and advertising campaigns. Her work was featured in publications such as Life, Good Housekeeping, and Ladies\' Home Journal.
