Tribe

SONGYE tribe occupies the central part of present-day DRCongo along the bank of Lualaba River and are surrounded with savannah andforest covered plateau. SONGYE population of around 150,000 people is dividedin numerous sub-groups and they are all ruled by one central chief(“Yakitenge”). Their patriarchal society (unlike their first neighbors LUBAtribe) is famous for following restrictive laws such as not showing grief, notdrinking in public and not shaking hands with men. SONGYE created numerous impressivesculptures and masks (with numerous variations due to the large area occupiedby them), characterized by powerful features, with the figures covered inparaphernalia and in most cases antelope horn on the top of the head.

SONGYE fetish figures are numerous and diverse both in size(10-150cm) and most of them are usually male, standing on a circular base withtheir hands resting on the abdomen. Strips of metal, tack nails or otherparaphernalia (animal horn) are sometimes applied (on face) to put away evilspirits and this statue is a typical example of this custom. Usually, top ofthe head or abdomen are hollow to accommodate for “Bajimba” or “Bishimba” whichgives power to the statue. Also, other magical objects like snakeskin, animalhide, feathers, necklaces or bracelets are attached to it by local doctor“Nganga” to enhance its power even more. Small fetish figures protectindividuals against death and disease. This figure epitomizes the best ofSONGYE artistic tendencies, but also still emitting strong energy that wasobviously protecting the important family or member of the clan for many years.

Wood, copper plates (crown & face), tack nails, copperrings/bracelets, glass beads, cowry shells (eyes), vegetal rope, hand woven(grass) fabric, antelope horn (head top), pangolin and monitor lizard skin,animal teeth.
