Landscape Painting

“Early Autumn”

NearPine Grove (Oregon)

Size: Image/Board (unframed) measures 18 x 22 inches. This is unframed.

Condition: Please see pictures. Painting seems in excellent condition - we see no crackle or flaking or abrasions, etc. We are not art experts, but possibly it could use a cleaning to brighten it - but we can\'t be sure if that\'s the case - of course we didn\'t touch it at all.

Oil (we are pretty sure) on Canvas Board. Manser appeared to do either oils or watercolors.

Signed lower RH corner and described on the rear label, apparently in Manser\'s writing, but not positive (see pic). Not Dated. Presumed 1930-1960 but we haven\'t done much research on it.

The image included of a recently sold painting (2023) was the closest we could find to something similar in the past year or two - it is on a smaller 12 x 16 inch board, and is much less complex in color and content. It is NOT part of this sale (we don\'t own it!) and is shown for research purposes only.

Local pickup in Portland or nearby is an option. Otherwise, shipped USPS Ground Advantage, USPS Priority or FedEx Ground - all with signature required, unless other requested.

Although Manser was a prolific artist in both watercolor and oil, his work is in demand and pieces rarely come up for sale. His more expensive works are larger paintings of dramatic mountain views. Otherwise he painted mostly landscapes in Oregon and the Northwest, similar to his contemporary, Clyde Leon Keller.

Born in Kent, England, in 1886 and trained at the KingCharles School of Art, Percy Manser immigrated to Canada in his early twenties. He loved the natural beauty of the Northwest, and in 1917 he and his wifeClementine settled in Hood River to begin life as orchardists. Manser alsoestablished himself as a landscape artist in theplein-airtradition,using highlights of light, shadow, and intense color. His artwork would bringhim regional and national fame, particularly because of his memorable paintingsof theMount Hoodarea.

Percy Manser first exhibited his artwork at local countyfairs and then at the Oregon State Fair in 1925. That year also marked hisparticipation in a benefit for Hood River\'s community hospital, which featuredtwenty-two of his oil paintings, mostly landscapes of the region. Over time, hepainted murals for the local courthouse, the hospital, Riverside Church, theElks Building, and Odell\'s Wyeast school.

Beginning in 1934, Manser participated in the federal WorksProgress Administration (WPA) program. His mural that surrounds the auditoriumstage at Hood River Middle School depicts Barlow Trail pioneers and NativeAmericans on the one side and the harvests of settlers in the Hood River Valleyon the other.

In time, Manser sold his orchards so he could devote histime to painting. He was a member of theOregon Society of Artistsandexhibited with them regularly, often winning awards. He also entered his workin the regional annual shows at thePortlandArt Museum and theSeattle Art Museum. During the 1930s, he exhibited with the American ArtistsProfessional League, and he was one of six artists selected for the NationalExhibition of American Art in New York in 1936. Perhaps his most enduring partnershipwas with Maryhill Museum, located east of Hood River across theColumbiaRiverin Washington. Maryhill presented Manser’s work in severalone-person exhibitions from 1941 to 1956, and most recently in 2008.

Manser\'s career spanned sixty years and is still consideredone of the outstanding regional artists of his time. He died in Hood River in1973. His work can be found in the permanent collections of thePortlandArt Museum, theOregon Historical Society, the University of Oregon, theUniversity of Idaho, Maryhill Museum, and the History Museum of Hood RiverCounty and in many private collections.
