ORDER HOLY APOSTLE ANDREW THE FIRST - CALLED: The ROYAL FAMILY AWARD is 56” SOLID GOLD, oblong, filled with blueenamel with the image of the crucified St. Andrew on it. At the ends of thecross are gold letters: \"SAPR\"(Sanctus St. Andreas Patronus Russian -Saint Andrew the Patron of Russia).
The Cross is superimposed on a double - headed Russian eagle, filled with blackenamel, crowned with three crowns. On the reverse side of the badge, on thechest of the eagle, on a white field there is an inscription in black enamel:\"For Faith and Loyalty\". The cross is suspended on a blue enamelribbon from the imperial crown. The crown has a large ribbon eyelet on theback.Bluesilk moiré ribbon. Ribbon width - 10 cm.The Order of Saint AndrewMedal Design: The insignia of the order consisted of a badgeand star. The badge is an enameled crowned black double - headed eagle bearinga blue St. Andrew’s Cross (saltire) with St. Andrew crucified upon it; on thearms of the saltire were the Latin letters ‘SAPR‘ (‘St. Andrew, Patronof Russia’). The Order St. Andrew the Apostle the First -Called was established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, in honor of SaintAndrew, the first apostle of Jesus and patron saint of Russia. It was bestowedin a single class and was only awarded for the most outstanding civilian ormilitary merit.

The signsof the order of St. Andrew the First-Called consisted of the followingelements: the sign (cross) of the order itself, the main image of which was St.Andrew, crucified, according to legend, on an X-shaped cross, and a silvereight-pointed star, with the motto of the order placed in its central medallion\" For faith and loyalty.\" The badge of the order was worn on a wideblue ribbon over the right shoulder, and the star was placed on the left sideof the chest. On especially solemn occasions, the badge of the order was wornon the chest, on a gold figured chain covered with multi-colored enamels.

The first knight of the order was Fedor Golovin. Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who received it onFebruary 8, 1700 from the hands of Peter I, became the second cavalier of theorder. The remaining 38 cavaliers of this order were granted during the reignof Peter.
Peter I, himself was awarded the seventhOrder of St. Andrew - in 1703 for leading the capture of two Swedish warshipsat the mouth of the Neva.
