Sèvres was a popular factory for the commission and production of royal, imperial and diplomatic gifts, as well as for direct purchases by royal families and the aristocracy.

Monarchs and leaders across the Western world looked to France for their important commissions and major purchases. For example, Catherine the Great ordered a fabulous service from Sèvres in 1776. The majority of Her service is in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, but a few pieces have come up for sale over the years, including a pair of ice-pails, covers and liners, selling for £842,500 with premium, and a soup-plate, which sold for £137,000.

Royal and political patronage continued over successive decades into the 19th century and beyond.

Napoleon ordered the service ‘Marly Rouge’, which was delivered to Château de Fontainebleau in October 1809, shortly before the Emperor arrived for a one-month stay. His Imperial M~s service was decorated with finely painted moths within red and gilt borders. A portion of that service sold in the Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller in May 2018 for the world record price of $1,812,500.

Please Enjoy this Note: Following the very rude spamming communication from a potential buyer regarding authenticity of one of my Sevres porcelain collection items ( would not even let my replies to go back to him), in order to prevent future misunderstandings with any buyers, IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand on this Memorial Day, 30 of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, declaring to add the following mandatory note to all my current and future Sevres listing item descriptions:

“Not sure if this item is still part of the original order commissioned by a Monarch (meaning kings or the emperor’s, such as Napoleon I, Louis Philippe, Napoleon III, etc) or the augmented part of the royal order, or a later copy made in 19th or 20th centuries, but either way even if and when it is just Sevres “Style” they still are rare pieces of porcelain art. This note is going to be added to all listings even if and when I am 100 % sure they are original ones. Now it is up to a potential buyer to investigate before purchasing and making their own informed decision. Meanwhile, please feel free to share your options and negotiate price by sending me your best offers but be assured that no one can intimidate me to reduce a price on any original or potentially not original items in a rude way.”

Condition:

This is a very rare item marked Sevres as shown. It is entirely handpainted with a Napoleonic military scene on one side and a bucolic scene on the other. The lid has a small chip on the inner rim which is just barely visible on the outer edge. The sugar bowl is missing 3 little gold dots around the reserve frame. Otherwise it is in excellent condition.
