Very Beautiful Rare Find Large Vintage Rococo Cast Iron Picture Frame with Perfect Copper/Brass Finish. Looks like new!
Holds 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inch picture. Total size of frame is 13 1/2 inches high and 11 inches wide.
The frame weighs 2 pounds 10oz. without the glass or backing and 3 pounds 4 oz. with the glass and backing.
This frame is a very rare \"one of a kind\". I purchased this frame over 30 years ago from a man whose grandfather worked at the company that made these frames.
The seller told me that a faulty casting mold caused the midline top piece of this picture frame to break off when the frame was taken out of the mold.
His grandfather kept the frame for himself and finished it with many layers of Copper metal veneer on the front and Brass/Copper veneer on the back.
Most of these frames were made with one thin coat of metal finish which wore off over a few years. It has been common to see these cast iron picture frames painted to replace the lost metal veneer.
The Copper and Brass veneer on this frame still looks like New!
The frame will oxidize just like a copper penny so using copper or brass polish on it every 5 or more years removes that. I have only needed to polished it 3 or 4 times since owning it.
This is a rare opportunity to own a Vintage Cast Iron Picture Frame that looks as good as it did when it was made 100+ years ago.
One of the backing tabs has been replaced. The screws usually have to be removed all the way to put a picture in the frame. The back fits very tight on the frame which works great for holding pictures in place. This frame still has the original glass from when it ws made which is also very rare.
I have included a picture of the missing midline piece from another frame here on so you can see what is missing. I think the frame looks better without the missing piece.
The frame will ship with the glass wrapped separately to prevent it from breaking.
