MONUMENTAL & HISTORIC WATERCOLOR - A REMARKABLE WORK! approx 40\" by 26\" and a Watercolor Gouache entitled- \'The Lichtenstein Cafe, 7 Dec\' by Artist, Soldier, Author Christian Wilhelm Faber du Faur (German, 1780-1857), a Lieutenant in Napoleon\'s Grand Army during the Invasion of Russia, this work (fully guaranteed to be done by the hand ofChristian Wilhelm Faberdu Faur) was done as part of a series and was later reproduced and sold as stone lithographs a copy of one such litho is viewable in plate # 12; this image depicts the Towns folks (the Jews) and the French Troops before their leaving and a second Watercolor I have for sale by du Faur (please see my other listings to view it) the ragged remnants of the artist\'s artillery regiment attempting to regroup at the last stop in Vilna, Russia on the retreat from Moscow, under pursuit by Cossacks, showing officers of the 25th Division, this painting was used to create the print as depicted in the book WITH NAPOLEON IN RUSSIA The Illustrated Memoirs of Major Faber du Faur, 1812 , (the Book can be purchased at Amazon.com) The condition prior to our conservator\'s restoration was fair.. plate 4 shows a portion of the painting before restoration and plate 5 shows the same portion after restoration....plate #12 shows an actual stone lithograph of the painting (the litho does not show the tiled floor which is very obvious in the painting). As to the restoration that was expertly done, some small areas of water staining, two small punctures, small edge tears, stretcher impression have all been totally restored by our Conservator.. Now after considerable restoration fees the finished Gouache looks Glorious as seen in the many jpegs that I put up. You cannot see the water stains and all previous problems have now been restored. This art work is a remarkable record of the end of Napoleon\'s Grand Army made by an Officer who was there and participated and was the chap who wrote the Book. His Book is entitledWith Napoleon\'s Army in Russia (cover page plate 9) and it was byChristian Wilhelm vonFaber du Faur who was the officer who painted and wrote the book,...The drawings name is the \"Lichtenstein Café \" This is the original and highly Important watercolor gouche that all the very popular stone lithographs of Lichtenstein Cafe were made from. This is akin to having and selling the original Art works which Currier & Ives used to make their lithographs from.In this drawing there is so much to take in, each face can tell a story. The quality is so very strong and beautifully executed. Notice the faces and especially the Hands of the 2 Rabbis right above the Midget, and theNicotinestains on the Ceiling, the smoke from Cigarettes and steam coming from the tea cups and the disheveled look on the Jewish Midget to the right of the seated Boy. The stares on all the faces so intent. Du Faur left out nothing. Masterful simply the Best.Russian troops were on their way to catching the French. The French Soldiers were with the Townspeople in the Cafe The Cafe is what the French Troops used as their headquarters. Please take your time in feeling the looks of the folk in that Cafe. This Painting gives a great feel as to how the locals felt about the French who were leaving to get away from the incoming Russian Troops. The Townsfolk did not want to anger the Russians and accommodating a French Soldier did not make for to rosy a future with the Russians headed to Town. I have 2 Paintings/Drawings and both are pictured in the Book and each will be soldseparately.This again is the Original Art Work and not the Lithographs that are being sold. Some thoughts...The Lichtenstein Cafe has been totally restored and now looks just Marvelous. The provenance does not get stronger then the previous owner which was notedEntrepreneurMr. Alex Acevado , art expertand owner of the noted Alexander Galleries in Manhattan NY, further that this exact drawing Lichtenstein Cafe sold at Thomaston Galleries sale House on September 1, 2007 for $20,000.00The looks both of the Jews and of the French Soldiers in the Cafe are so very serious and somber.
