Meteorites are stones that originate in outer space fromparticles of comets, the asteroid belt, and planets and have survived the fallthrough Earth'satmosphere. The composition and color range of the meteorite isvaried. There are three classes of meteorite: the irons, chondrites, andachondrites. The irons are comprised of mainly iron and nickel; the chondritesare comprised of stone, and the achondrites are comprised of very rare stonyirons consisting of stone fragments and/or beautiful olivine crystals imbeddedin a nickel-iron matrix.

Campo del Cielo refers to a group of iron meteorites and thearea in Argentina where they were found. The site straddles the provinces ofChaco and Santiago del Estero, located 620 miles north-northwest of BuenosAires, Argentina and approximately 310 miles southwest of Asunción, Paraguay.The crater field covers 11.5 by 1.9 miles and contains at least 26 craters, thelargest being 377 by 299 feet.

The craters are estimated to be four to five thousand yearsold. They were reported to the general public in 1576, but were alreadywell-known by aboriginal peoples. The craters and surrounding areas containmany fragments of an iron meteorite. In total, approximately 100 tons offragments have been recovered, the most of any meteorite find.

The two largest fragments, the 30.8-ton Gancedo and 28.8-tonEl Chaco, are among the heaviest single-piece meteorite masses recovered onEarth, following the 60-ton Hoba meteorite and a 31-ton fragment of the CapeYork meteorite.
