A LITTLE HISTORY

The Valmor Products Company operated on Chicago\'s south side from 1926 to 1984. It primarily produced beauty products, such as face powders, hair creams, and perfumes. The dominant theme of the Valmor advertisements was romantic love, and graphics typically featured the promise of satisfaction in pursuit of the opposite sex. Lucky Brown cosmetics were distributed by Famous Products, owned by Morton Neumann. a Jewish American chemist in Chicago, Illinois, whose Valmor company also manufactured and packaged hoodoo curios and spiritual supplies such as Genuine Mo-Jo Brand lodestones under the King Novelty Company name and produced cosmetics under the Sweet Georgia Brown and Madame Jones names. Morton Neumann was better know as an avid modern art collector who mingled with such characters as Pablo Pacaso. Neumann had an eye for art and invested a great deal into the pursuit with pieces from Picasso, Miro and Matisse. Because of his renown fame, many people over look how his business bought him there.

While Neumann was a keen businessman, he would not have risen into Chicago\'s socialites with out the help of his wife and his African American marketing graphics artists, Charles Dawson and lesser known artist, Jay Jackson. While his wife is credited with helping, the Valmor story can not discussed with out mentioning it\'s main artist, Charles Dawson. Charles Dawson is credited to designing many of the Valmor labels starting in the 1930s. A graduate of Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, with a degree from the School at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dawson excelled as a founding member of Chicago’s first black artists collective (the Arts and Letter Society). He served in World War I and after returning home became a advertising illustrator and an organizer of several black artist exhibitions—including the first ever held at a major American museum (1927’s Negro In Art Week at the Art Institute). Dawson’s early years with Valmor coincided with him becoming “the only black artist to have a substantial role in the 1933–1934 Century of Progress Fair,” for which he produced “a mural illustrating the Great Migration for the National Urban League\'s display in the Hall of Social Science . . . and a poster for the Pageant of Negro Music, \'O, Sing A New Song,\' which took place at Soldier Field.” Dawson was born in Brunswick, Georgia, in 1889 and it is believed his influence helped shape the Hoodoo curiosity side of the company that targeted the African community, many of which were from the South themselves. These Southern elements are recognizable in many Valmor beauty labels in addition to their line of Hoodoos and curiosities.

Dawson\'s work is incredibly progressive for the time on many levels, even if it did support the growing trend of cultural assimilation common during the period. Artistically speaking, Dawson\'s barely recognized talent for Pop Art style predates such artists as Andy Warhol quietly influencing future work such as the album cover of the Rolling Stones\' 1978 record, Some Girls. It spoke to the often over looked African American consumer promising a certain sense of mainstream acceptability with out completely shedding culture and tradition. It was not ashamed to use romantic and sexualized advertising or a sense of women\'s power and liberation to entice it\'s consumers. Some might see Valmor\'s marketing as a white washing of black cultural sensibility. I don\'t. I see it as a modernizing of social equality, a company that speaks to the wishes and needs of a minority without silencing or eradicating completely what it meant to be African American, but rather defining the ideal African American during this period. Valmor\'s approach to the market, for this reason, makes it unique during the period. Drawing mainly from Valmor\'s African American employees, it\'s majority black door to door salesmen and women, Valmor was able to entice and impact their consumers with a mutually symbiotic relationship which leaves one questioning who had the most influence over the other. Valmor promised an ideal story with in the vacuum of the period and for this reason this label is more than just a beauty product it is a history.
