Thetitle ofBaron Douglas, ofDouglasin thecounty ofLanark, has been created twice, once in thePeerage of Great Britainand once inthePeerage of the United Kingdom. The firstcreation was on 8 July 1790 forArchibaldJames Edward Douglas, MP forForfarshire. He was bornArchibald Stewart, son ofSir John Stewart, 3rd BaronetofGrantully by his second wife Lady Jane Douglas, sister ofArchibald Douglas, 1st Duke ofDouglas. He had changed his name to Douglas in 1761 as heir to hisuncle, but was disinherited by theCourt ofSessionin 1767 and only confirmed in the estates by theHouse ofLordsin 1769. This was known as theDouglas Cause.By his first wife Lady Lucy, daughter ofWilliam Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose,he was father of the second and third Barons, the younger of whom served as MPforLanarkshire. By his secondwife Lady Frances, daughter ofFrancis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith,he was father of the fourth Baron. None of his sons had issue, so the Baronybecame extinct on the death of the fourth Baron, 6 April 1857. The secondcreation was on 11 June 1875 forCospatrick Alexander Home, 11th Earlof Home. He had been previously elected aScottish representative peerand thisBarony gave him a permanent seat in theHouse ofLords. He had married in 1832 Lucy Montagu-Scott, daughter ofHenry JamesMontagu-Scott, 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughtonby his wife JaneMargaret Douglas, daughter of the first Baron Douglas by his first wife LucyGraham. Their son adopted the surname of Douglas-Home in 1877 and succeeded asBaron Douglas and Earl of Home in 1888. The title is currently held byDavid Douglas-Home, 15th Earl of Homeand5th Baron Douglas.
