John Baker Hollister(November 7, 1890 – January 4, 1979)was a to 1937. Born inCincinnati, Hollister attended the localschools andSt. Paul\'sSchoolinConcord, New Hampshire. Hegraduated fromYale Universityin1911, and next studied at theUniversity of Munich,Germanyfor a year. He graduated fromHarvard Law Schoolin1915. Hollister wasadmitted to thebarthe same year and began his practice in Cincinnati,Ohio.On August 15, 1917, he was appointed a first lieutenant in theUnited States Armyandserved inFranceduringWorld War Ias captain of Battery B, Forty-sixthArtillery Corps, later being in command of the Third Battalion of his regiment.Following the Armistice, he was on detached service with theAmerican Relief AdministrationunderHerbert Hooverin 1919. After his discharge, Hollisterresumed his law practice in Cincinnati. He served as director of variousfinancial and manufacturing corporations, and was a member of theCincinnati Board of Educationfrom1921 to 1929. Hollister was elected as a special election held on November 3, 1931, to fill the vacancy created bythe death ofNicholas Longworth. He wasreelected to the two succeeding Congresses and served from November 3, 1931, toJanuary 3, 1937. He was defeated for reelection in 1936 and resumed thepractice of law. Hollister served as a delegate to theRepublican National Conventionsin1940,1944,1948,and1952.He headed the United Nations Relief Rehabilitation Association\'s mission totheNetherlands, 1945, and served as executive director oftheHoover CommissionfromOctober 1953 to July 1955. He was director of theInternationalCooperation Administrationfrom June 15, 1955, until hisresignation on September 13, 1957.
