In the early 1800s, Troy was known for its carriage manufacturing industry. Charles Veazie, along with partners such as Orsamus Eaton and Uri Gilbert, played a pivotal role in this field.
In 1815, Veazie & Barnard, coach and carriage makers, operated a factory on the south side of Titus’ Inn on First Street in Troy.
By 1832, Veazie, Eaton, and Gilbert had built around 200 stage-coaches, valued at $100,000. These elegant red carriages were lined with red morocco and were in high demand.
Their coaches were not only used in the United States but also reached places like Yucatan, Nova Scotia, Mexico, Canada, and South America.
The carriages were assembled from pieces and parts sent to various stations, showcasing the ingenuity of Troy’s craftsmen1.
Legacy and Burial:
Charles Veazie passed away in 1872. He is buried in Troy, New York2.
Another Charles Veazie, born in 1827, also lived in Troy. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery3.

Henry Mason Morfit was born sometime between 1790 and 1800 in Norfolk, Virginia.
He studied law and was admitted to the bar.
Morfit lived in Missouri for a period and later settled in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1816, he married Catharine Campbell in Washington, D.C., and they had sixteen children.
During the summer of 1836, President Andrew Jackson dispatched Morfit to investigate the condition of the newly formed Republic of Texas.
His report, submitted to Congress, was favorable toward Texas but advised against immediate recognition due to the threat of a new Mexican invasion1.
Later Years and Legacy:
In 1861, Morfit was elected to the Maryland legislature.
He passed away in Baltimore on December 1, 1865, and was laid to rest in Washington1.
