This photo is part of a MUCH larger and very eclectic collection of photos and documents that was purchased in Europe several years ago. The acid free sticker on the reverse of this photo was part of the previous owners collection and catalog system.

Up for sale is a Piece of Broadway History. This is a Late 1860’s Antique Woodburytype CDV Photo of Joseph Joe Jefferson III. In this photo Jefferson is in costume as Old Man Rip Van Winkle. This is a role Jefferson cherished and a role he played almost exclusively for 40 years. The photo was taken by Sarony Co and Stephen Campbell. They were partners at the NY address on the card from 1866 to 1870.

Measurements: 2 3/8 x 3 1/2

Condition:

Some oxidation and discoloration consistent with age but overall in exceptional condition. Light fading or over exposure. The bottom margin reads Jefferson and the reverse says Joe Jefferson, both written in pencil. Otherwise, this photo is of exceptional quality with consideration of its age.

Biography:

Jefferson began writing in Australia and learned about the end of the war and Lincoln's assassination on his way back to the US in 1865. He had personal connections to both parties, as Booth was an acquaintance and Lincoln had supported his family. Despite his typically lively demeanor, the news left him visibly affected. Returning to America in 1866, he continued performing in "Rip Van Winkle" for 40 years, focusing solely on this character. His success abroad boosted America's reputation, and he toured the states annually with his renowned play.
