1863 Large Deed Berks County Pa Maurer to Kemp R81 Revenue Stamps One ImperfVery attractive deed measures approx 23" x 17.5" when fully opened. Dated April 7, 1863, the document is for the sale of a messuage (house), barn and 2 tracts of land in District Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, to a George Kemp, a farmer from adjoining Hereford. The seller is Henry Maurer, administrator of the estate of the late Simon Focht. An interesting addendum on the back is from April 10, 1863 and has George Kemp selling the property (minus one acre?) to Daniel Kemp for the same amount. There are two early use US Internal Revenue stamps (required to help finance the cost of the Civil War), each a $2 Conveyance issue (R81). The April 7 stamp is the regular issue and has a clipped corner. The April 10 stamp is a scarcer imperforate issue and is in terrific condition. Document is on quality stock and generally is clean with only moderate wear. Displays very well.
