This photo is part of a MUCH larger and very eclectic collection of photos and documents that was purchased in Europe several years ago. The acid free sticker on the reverse of this photo was part of the previous owners collection and catalog system.

Up for sale is a lovely an 1870’s Antique Woodburytype Photo of Helena Cécile Ernstone. Ernstone was an actress and a member of the Ladies Of The London Stage Group from 1867-1881. The reverse of the photo is signed in pencil Helena Ernstone and below that the date 23 Jan 1875.

Measurements: 2 3/8 x 3 1/2

Condition:

Some oxidation and discoloration consistent with age but overall in exceptional condition. There appears to be a small tear on the front right about 1/8” (see photos). The bottom 2 corners have been cut as well. Otherwise, this photo is of exceptional quality with consideration of its age.

Biography:

In 1873, Ernstone starred in The Fair Rosamond at Astley's Theatre. She also played Grace Roseberry in The New Magdalen at the Olympic that year, followed by Henriette in The Two Orphans in 1874. In 1875, she originated the role of Ruth Leigh in The Detective at the Mirror Theatre. The Times praised her performance but criticized the play's length. In 1878, she portrayed Olivia in Twelfth Night at the Haymarket Theatre and later returned to the Olympic for a revival of The Two Orphans.
