In full color. Fatima cigarettes were an exotic blend of Turkish tobaccos. Easter Lily and Wild Rose are the two silks included in this sale.

Rare and striking \"1880s Lot of Two (2) Antique Fatima Cigarette Insert Premiums, Flower Silks.\" They are printed on silk fabric (hence the name) and each measures approx. 3-1/4\" X 1-7/8\" (≈8.3 cm X 4.7 cm.) All were printed in full color.

The practice of inserting advertising and premiums in tobacco products began around 1870, and was common up until the first couple decades of the 20th century. They included things like cigarette cards, cigar ribbons, tin tobacco tags, pin-back buttons, and cigarettes silks and flannels.

The fabric types of premiums were often used by home makers and seamstresses to make quilts and other textile items for the home. If you do a search for \"cigarette silks\" you\'ll find examples of products made throughout that time. Textile premiums were fashionable during World War I and World War II, due to paper shortages.

Fatima cigarettes were launched in the 1870s, and was marketed as an exotic blend of Turkish tobaccos. Fatima cigarettes were advertised aiming at the educated and prosperous consumer, and claimed that the team of cigarettes were always appropriate after an elegant meal or fashionable evening out on the town.

These fascinating Cigarette Silks are originals (not copies.) They are in very good condition. The two Fatima floral cigarette silks are still bright in color. And they have the typical fraying along the top and bottom edges, with a very mild amount of surface and edge wear.
