18th C. Antique American Pewter Deep Dish Platter, Jacob Whitmore, Middletown, CT., c. 1758 - 1790. This is an early and very attractive large pewter deep dish plate with a polished patina. This plate has a single reeded rim and a turned body with a deep dish bowl. The small platter is a lovely example of a very early revolutionary War period marked American pewter dish. This platter has two impressed maker's marks, one that is worn. This is the mark used by Jacob Whitmore, who was one of the first pewterer's to work out of Middletown, CT., along with Thomas Danforth II. The two of them sometimes worked together and were known to share molds. This mark is listed in "GUIDE TO AMERICAN PEWTER", by Carl Jacobs, page 175; where it identifies these marks as #268. A 7 7/8 inch diameter pewter plate in 1957 with this mark, was valued at $50 back in 1957.This has a sticker on the back that reads, "R.S.M.
