DescriptionA marvelous objectd'art is this exquisite Louis XV-era étui. Crafted entirely of rose and yellow gold, this stunning octagonal vessel bears an exceptional, engraved Neoclassical design punctuated by florals, garlands, basket & musical instruments . Étuis were once carried by affluent members of society to allow for tiny toiletries, sealing wax, personal effects and the more clandestine purpose of concealing correspondence between lovers or other cohorts. Confidential notes would be tucked inside the box, which would then have been sealed. . .
This incredible Louis XV-era étui is a work of skillful artistry. Crafted entirely of rose and yellow gold, this stunning vessel bears an exceptionally intricate, classically inspired motif punctuated by blooms, garlands, basket, dove bird & musical instruments. Resplendent in its artistry and beauty, this étui flawlessly reflects the 18th-century taste for classical refinement and delicate, intricate ornamentation.Named from the Old French word “estuier,” meaning “to keep or hold,” an étui is a very versatile item. These ornamental cases could be made of any material, from precious metals like gold or silver to exotic materials such as tortoiseshell or shagreen. Though many were used for more clandestine reasons, some also served the more practical purpose of holding small items such as scissors, thimbles, bodkins and needles, makeup pencils and even a doctor’s lancet.
