1901 Waltham Ship Chronometer in 3-Tier Gimbaled Wood Box - Clock Needs Service:

Up for sale is a Waltham17 Jewel Ship’sNavigational Chronometer which was made in 1901. The clock is housed in an Elgin 3-tier wood chronometer box. The clock case is mounted on a gravity leveled gimbal suspension ring. The clock is not currently running, read more below.
The Waltham clock is not running.The clock is fully wound but it does not tick.
The 17 jewel, 18s size movement appears to be complete and is comparatively clean. See photos.
The balance seems to be good and it does not wobble. End shake appears to be good. The wheel can be rotated slightly but no power is reaching it. It is possible the works are merely in need of a proper cleaning and oiling.
The clock and box are being sold as-is, in non-running condition.
The dial has patina commensurate with its 123 years of age and prior service.
The time-setting lever is present and works as intended.
The blued steel hands are in good condition, see photos.
The clock crystal is in good condition overall, with no significant wear or sctatches. There are traces of crazing which are only visible when viewed with bright side-lighting (see photos of crystal).
The brass clock case and gimbal ring have some oxidation and minor signs of scuffs and wear.
The clock\'s time-set function has been carefully tested and it is working properly.
The brass gimbal ring and locking arm are each complete, and both move and swing freely as intended.
The 3-tier Elgin wood box is in good overallcondition. However, the top lid has a visible wood-shrinkage crackas shown in the photos.
The square glass viewing plate is clear, and is free of any cracks or chips.
The box has a lock and included key, both of which are functioning.
The box latches and hinges and lid stays are in good cosmetic condition and are each working properly. There is light accumulation of oxidation on some parts of the polished surfaces. See photos.

As per best practices for shipping fine antique marine chronometers, this delicate clock will be carefully removed from the wooden box and packed separately (outside the wood box) with plenty of protection and cushioning.
