This fantasticcard is one in a series of 50 cards issued by the KRUG BAKING COMPANY, of Jamaica New York. One was insertedinto each package of their brand of KRUG’S TOASTMASTER AND WHOLE WHEAT Bread The series is designated as series D50in Burdick’s American CardCatalogue and is entitled “ MAGICCARDS OF KNOWLEDGE” Burdick does notprovide a date for this series but I believe it to have been issued in the early to mid 1920’s. There is a Patent date of July 12 1921, and March 6 1923. Other bread card series I have scene have the1921 Patent date on them held by the Invisible Color Print Crop, of New York City. That company were the ones who came up withthe unique printing technique that makes these cards “Magic”. As the instructions on the back explain thechild could brush water over the surface of the card and the previously “Invisible”Colors would appear.The cards feature an illustration with differentquestions relating to nature for the most part.The back gives information about that question, and explains how a childcould exchange 40 of the paintedpictures for a Krugs DecoratedBirthday Cake delivered to them ontheir birthday. This card is #44 in the series. The Card measures 4 ½inches by 3 1/4 inches approximately . The card doeshave small piece of paper missing at the side edge. This is common with many bread issues as thecompanies sometimes attached thecards to the bread wrappers and they had to be torn off to be removed from the package. There are also some spots ofdiscoloration. It is also free from majorcreases. What is also interesting aboutthis particular card is the IT HAS A FACTORY REDEMPTION OVERSTAMP ON THE BACK (that mentionsthat a cake will be delivered on your birthday if you present this card withthe stamp to your local baker). . These are not often seen. I have scannedthe front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the conditionfor yourself.
