Two framed 1927 silhouettes, one of a young George Zaharias (the wrestler) at about 19 years old with his friend (my great uncle), Ernest F. Reid, signed by the silhouette artist on the silhouette of Ernest Reid. On the Zaharias picture is printed: \" Original Bavarian Brau-Haus, 239 East 86th St., New York City, (Tel. Sac 7633). The silhouette was likely done before Zaharias made his wrestling debut.
My uncle, Ernest Reid, bought/sold cars back in the 20\'s/30\'s. He travelled often from his home in Houston, Texas to New York to buy cars. I don\'t know how he met Zaharias. There is a typed history I wrote that is glued to the back of the paper of the frame. I framed the silhouettes in 2012 to preserve them. They should remain together because it adds to the history and explains the context of Zaharias\'s dedication.
The Brau-Haus was called Rudy and Maxl\'s Brau-Haus and was located in a district known as Yorkville on Manhattan\'s Upper East Side that was known for its many German businesses. It closed down at some point, but was extremely popular. The outside of the beer joint looked like a genuine German alpine house and the inside was authentically appointed with alot of wood.
This is likely the only silhouette ever done of Zaharias so it is extremely rare. Each silhouette is on textured heavy cardstock with deckled edges. They each measure 3 5/8 by 5 3/8\". They are set in the frame on acid-free paper under glass. The frame measures 10\" by 12\" and has a kraft paper backing with gold-colored braided hanging cord. Has been hanging on the wall since I framed it in 2012.
