1930s? INDIAN GUM Card YOUNG BLACK DOG Osage V416 V254 ALLEN & GINTER Canada:
$24.99

This scarce CardVARIATION IS OFTEN REFFERED TO AS THE ANNONYMOUS ISSUED SERIES. It makes no mention of a manufacturer on it,however the style, size and image is identical a series issued by the CANADIAN CHEWING GUM Co. as an insert premium with their PapooseGum in the 1930’s identified as V254 in Burdicks American Card Catalogue, andthe series issued by the Hamilton Chewing Gum under the title TEEPEE gumidentified as series V416. The date ishard to pin down on this one. TheCanadian Chewing Gum issues were definitely issued in the 1930’s. The Non Sports Bible indicates that theTEEPEE series may have been issued in the 1950’s by parkhurst. I know this is incorrect because I have theWrapper for the TEEPEE series and it indicates the manufacturer as HamiltonChewing Gum ( and it is a 2 cent wrapper).Hamilton Chewing Gum also issued the V289 Hollywood Stars series in1938, and the V290 Cowboy Series in the 1930’s as well according to the NonSports Bible). As I mentioned theHamilton Chewing Gum TeePee wrapper that I own is a 2 Cent wrapper. However the backs of this card indicate thatthis series was given away with 1cent Sticks of TeePee Picture Gum. I have seen counter boxes for other cardseries where the cards are wrapper free. The idea being you buy one card and take one stick of gum for 1 cent I speculate that the series without theteepee gum name (anonymous issue series) may have been the series issued by HamiltonGum in the 2 cent TeePee Picture Gum Wrapper I have (possibly at a later date), Often all three types of backs are foundtogether in lots when you come across them, so it it is still a mystery. The front of the card features an image ofthe particular chief (taken from the paintings housedin the Library of Congress), while the back features a brief history of theNative American featured on thefront, in both French & English.. This is a nice addition when compared tothe other sets using these images. TheAllen and Ginter and other companies did not have any descriptions or historyabout the featured chiefs. The imagesused are the same used on other insert cards put out by Allen &Ginter Tobacco , American Caramel and Weber Bread to name a few. This card is number 16 in the series and features YOUNG BLACK DOG ofthe OSAGE tribe. The Card measures 2 13/16 inches by 2 7/8 inchesapproximately. The card does have some creasing and wear, especially to the back. I have scannedthe card fairly large, both front and back, for you to be able to judgecondition for yourself. I will be trying to listseveral EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days(spread across differentcategories),including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, thatwere put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread CoffeeTea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as NativeAmerican Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf,Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universitiesand Circus themes.
