1930s O-Pee-Chee KINGS & QUEENS Gum Card V302 OPC King RICHARD II 1377 Canadian:
$47.50

This scarce card was issuedin Canada by the O-Pee-Chee Company, ofLondon Ontario Canada, in their packs of Kings and Queens Bubble gum. They are listedas series V302 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue. Although no guide that I am aware of gives adefinite date of issue for this series , the last monarch recorded in the series is George V who reigned from 1910 till his death in 1936. So I have always assumedthat the card series is from some time in the 1930’s. An exceptionally rare series of 38 cards asindicated on the wrapper from theseries (which I have seen). Graphicallyinteresting portraits of the different Monarchs of the British Empire with thelower quarter of the card taken up with an illustration highlighting one of thehistorically significant episodes from the featuredmonarch’s years of rule. The backsfeature very clever little poems about the monarch’s time in power. It must be one of the earliest non-hockeycard series issued in Pack fromunder the O-Pee-Chee name, and oddly enough also list London, England as wellas London Ontario as corporate homes. However the back does indicate this was manufacture in Canada by the“Lithographed in Canada” statementon the back. There are two variationsof the back. One that features theO-Pee-Chee name and address and the words “Lithographedin Canada”, and one that only has “ Lithographedin Canada” on the back The cards are unnumberedbut can be organized by date of themonarch’s reign. The Card measures 3 1/2inches by 2 1/4 inches approximately. Thiscard features RICHARD II 1377. The card does have some areas ofdiscoloration (most noticeable on the back). However it is free from creases, with strong color. I havescanned the front and back of thecard fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself.Due to the lower population inCanada than in the US, print runs inCanada were much smaller comparedwith American Cards. (Because of this the majority of all Canadian non sportscards are far scarcer than card issuedin the USA & UK.)
