1st Maryland Cavalry Certificate of Discharge- Signed by Wm. D. Whipple
Dated 14 July, 1862, for August Nauman, a private in Captain Redpath\'s Company K, of the 1st Md. Cavalry; he mustered out in July of 1862 by reason of disability. Nauman was originally from Germany; 29 years old, and worked as a varnisher.
William Dennison Whipple, as Acting Adjutant General signed the document certifying that all is correct and Pvt. N. was certified by Doctor Pease.
William Dennison Whipple, born 1826, USMA Class of 1851. Assigned as a 2nd lt. to the 3rd Infantry, took part in the Gila Expedition against the Apaches in 1857; the Navaho Expedition in 1858, and the defense of Fort Defiance, New Mexico in 1860; He was quartermaster at Indianola, Texas when the Civil War began, and after U.S. forces surrendered to the Confederates in Texas, Whipple made his escape through enemy lines and reached Washington some time after. Commissioned captain and AAG and was present at the 1st Battle of Bull Run, Va. Ltcol. and ADC in the Middle Dept. with the 8th Corps and Chief of staff to Gen. Cadwallader. Appointed Brig. Gen. of Vols on July 17, 1863 and assigned to Gen. George H. Thomas\' staff and took part in the battle of Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and the Siege of Atlanta with the Army of the Cumberland. Whipple received brevet commissions for brigadier and major general in 1865. After the war, Whipple acted as Aide de Camp to the General of the Army (Wm T. Sherman) and was promoted to colonel in the AG\'s Dept. in 1887. He retired on August 2, 1890, and died in 1902.
