NEWPORT MERCURY December 5 & 12, 1807 ~ 4 pages in length, measure 11 x 18 inches. ~ Published during Jefferson’s Presidency, James Madison, Secretary of State is quoted severaltimes in the congressional reports, there is a great deal of European news of stirringsfor war. Articles on subjects of the time, as well as advertisementsfor ship cargos, houses to be let, death, marriage, etc. ~ The papers are delicate, printed onrag paper they are not crisp, but definitely need to be read with care. Chips are clearly seen in the photographs,chips near creases make some text unreadable, with a keen sense of pieces notlost, the meaning can be read. I havephotographed the pages in a most unflattering light as to be most clear of thecondition. Most of the paper isreadable, and it’s a great piece of history.
