A set of two vintage Japanese tea ceremony "Kobukusa" textiles. The design of the orange kobukusa, made by a leading manufacuter Tatsumura Art Textiles, is a modified version of the national treasure "Shishi-kari Monyo Nishiki" (lion-hunting pattern brocade), known as Shosoin Koshi Kachomon.
Kobukusa is an indispensable tool in the practice of the Japanese tea ceremony, paricularly associated with the Urasenke school. It typically measures about 15cm vertically and 15.9cm horizontally, slightly longer in width. Sewn along three sides, it connects the front and back, while the remaining side (one of the shorter 15cm sides) is referred to as "wa" or "wasa".Kobukusa is employed to cushion tea bowls or utensils, or to spread out on tatami mats during the examination of tea implements. Thanks to its frequently exquisite patterns, kobukusa can also enhance daily living as interior decoration.
