Until his death, Kaganoff was librarian of the American Jewish Historical Society. This work cumulates the bibliographies he compiled for the society's periodical, Judaica Americana. The book is organized under two headings that are further subdivided: "General Works" (e.g., "Bibliography," "Historiography," etc.) and "Special Studies" ("Education," "Medicine," "Zionism," etc.). Specific items are then listed by author. The section "Relations with Non-Jews" contains material on intermarriage, anti-Semitism, and black-Jewish relations, and "Relations Overseas" contains Holocaust literature. Some topics have a narrow focus, such as specific towns in the "Local History" category or family newsletters under "Genealogy." The work includes many items on Jews in Canada and Latin America. A few entries, such as the book about the Ben and Jerry ice cream factory, stretch the definition of Judaic-American studies.
Kaganoff's annotations summarize the more than 7,000 items in single sentences. Materials listed include adult and juvenile literature, print (books, monographs, periodical articles) and nonprint material, English and non-English publications. The "Periodicals" section lists the contents of every issue of every publication in Kaganoff's collection, some covering the entire 30-year period. Author and subject indexes in volume 2 include cross-references (e.g., "Catskills see also Borscht Belt" ). There are long lists of page numbers under some subjects (e.g., Argentina has more than 100); the subject index would have been easier to use if these had been subdivided.
No other bibliography covers Jews in the Americas in such detail. Oversized books are more expensive to ship, please ask for shipping quote for multiple books in advance to prevent any misunderstandings. International postage costs are subject to USPS yearly rate increases.
