Description: This mola panel is constructed of two brightly colored layers of cloth in much the same flavor as the category above. This category employs the same maze-like structures; however, the design is simply a repeat of a geometric shape. The style belies its complexity, seeming deceptively easy in its conceptualization and execution. In fact, this style is more difficult to carry out successfully than the naturalistic format. The top layer can therefore be basted in place along lines where the top layer would remain continuously intact. Basting is an important step in controlling the top layer. The geometric style requires a high level of technical virtuosity, as a slip with the scissors would destroy the intended effect.This semi-based mola probably represents the bulk of the designs made by the Kuna women. Many of these molas are done with geometric forms or repeat patterns of animals or flowers but do not specifically present scenes of daily life or advertisements. Women make them know that they will look wonderful viewed from across an island or when a woman is paddling a cayuco (dugout canoe) toward shore.
