ANTIQUE COPPER PITCHER REPOUSSÉ CHASING HAND FORGED ISLAMIC SCRIPT DESIGN RARE OOAK

This one-of-a-kind pitcher’s designs are interwoven in hand repoussé and chasing all over the piece, except the handle and bottom, which are smoothed copper. Intricate details abound—handmade rivets that attach the handle, curves of the handle and bulbous body, a delicate footed base and the unusually shaped spout. You can find a seam and almost see the artist’s fingerprints in the base. Notice how the copper is bent and folded flat to make smooth edges on top, bottom and handle edges. The late 1800s date is my best educated estimate.

Interior has blackened and is rough with age. This is a decorative piece only. Not for use as a pitcher or vase (except for dry arrangements). If water is left in this antique, it will slowly leak out. The handle is firmly attached, however it does move a bit, but it’s not loose.

This pitcher weighs almost 2 pounds. Its tallest point from base to handle top is 8.75 inches. Its widest point is 8 inches across roundest part of vessel and outward to include handle in total width. The center widest part of pitcher is 6 inches diameter, top opening is 3 inches diameter, although the spout makes it not a perfect circle. Base is 3.5 inches diameter. If the interior is messed with, black flakes will come out—it’s antique.

Repoussé is a metal process in which parts of the design are raised in relief from the back or inside of the piece using hammers and punches; definition and detail can be added from the front by chasing or engraving. The difficulty is to push the design from the inside to the outside perfectly. The word repoussé is French and means "pushed up.” Chasing (French: ciselure) or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, sinking the metal. The techniques are often used together.
