This lidded stein has an interesting cast pewter lid. It depicts an infantryman with his rifle and a griffen (part lion, part eagle) sitting beside him that symbolizes power, wealth, courage, and prestige. The stein has vertical sides (Most reproduction steins have tapered sides.) It has a lithopane in the inside bottom that resembles King Ludwig II of Bavaria. (Most reproduction steins have nudes or dancing girls in the lithopane.)Below the battle scenes is the mark,\"Regt. 2. Komp. 1905-1907. in Munchen.\", which was a Bavarian unit.The jackets and hats worn by the soldiers have small, raised, white paint dots (buttons). There is a name, Alois Wunsch, on the bottom ring of the stein. Perhaps this is the name of the original owner.
The stein is in good condition with no visible scratches, chips, or cracks. The ring on the pewter lid, where it attaches to the handle of the stein, looks like it may have been re-glued at some point (see closeup photos).
We believe this is an original regimental stein. However, we cannot verify its exact age, as we are not stein experts. We have described the details of the stein and included many photos so that you can decide for yourself if it is an original or a reproduction.
NOTE: An member who collects steins has informed us that this is indeed an antique regimental stein with an antique lid. In his opinion, however, the lid and stein do not match. The lid is for a Baden regiment and the stein is for a Bavarian (Munich) regiment.
