(Photograph Album) Thirty Six Black And White Albumen Photographs Of Turkey And Russia

Folio. Original half-morocco over cloth sold by William Spooner, (1796-1882), Publisher, 379 Strand, London with his small paper label to the rear paste-down. All edges gilt. Date: c.1870-1882. An album of 36 albumen travel photographs mounted on both sides o stiff card of views and peoples of Turkey and Russia. The sizes vary between being large (18), around 29.4cm x 24cm, medium (17), around 22cm x 19cm and the smallest (1), being around 11cm x 15cm. Some are identified and include The Golden Gate, Constantinople, The Mosque of Sultan Ahmed, The Bosphorus, An English Cemetery, Mosque of St Sophia, Therapia, Robert College, Odessa and Bulgarians. There then follows five photographs by Ferdinand Bureau, a French photographer working in Moscow up to his death in 1893. These date from c.1870 onwards. The titles are \'Vue De Moscou Prise Du Kremlin\', \'Moscou Cathedrale De L\'Assomption Au Kremlin\', \'Souvenir De Moscou, Porte Sainte Au Kremlin\', \'Souvenir De Moscou, Ivan Veleky Au Kremlin\' and \'Souvenir De Moscou, Grande Cloche Au Kremlin\'. (Works by Bureau are held by MOMA, New York. The collection includes \'Grande Cloche\' but does not appear to hold the other images listed here.) There then follows three more photographs and a number of blank pages. Binding very firm. Cloth worn and marked to the front board and slightly worn to the rear board. Corners rubbed. Endpapers spotted. Very slight foxing to the card mounts. Photographs in very good condition indeed with only minor spotting and wear and light foxing. Photographs of Turkey and especially Russia are scarce from this period and this album is in very good condition indeed.
