There are several that help determine a Valentine\'s value - size (matters in Valentines), condition, where made, how elaborate is it, and has it been modified or repaired.
This one hits all the right buckets. It is large, measuring 9\" tall by 6\" wide. It\'s condition is excellent - just a few very tiny creases to the ends of some of the flower edges that stick out; no breaks, no loose or damaged popups, stands really well. It is made in Germany (most desirable). And lastly it is elaborate with 4 popups AND a little honeycomb tissue rose. It hasn\'t been modified or changed.
The embossed die cuts are bright and shiny, which is another indicator of quality. The die cuts are exact, and once completed, the paper is lacquered for shine. The fold down card in the very front isn\'t lacquered, but it has a scrap valentine that is.
Additionally, the valentine s dated on the back. It was a gift to the teacher, from Jerome, Class of \'02 (that would be 1902). It even has it\'s original price, of 15 cents, which was really expensive in 1902. That would buy a nice dinner in 1902!
The valentine is lovely, and won\'t disappoint.
More info, if you are interested! To tell whether a valentine is one of the new reproductions from the 1990s and 2000s, look at the back. The backs will be bright white. The cardstock will feel solid, not fragile. The embossing, die cuts and gilt will be perfect, with no age discolorations or darkening. Basically, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is. I have seen lots of the reproduction pieces being sold as antique - especially the really large ones. Some of the new ones even have a date on them - but it\'s a date of the original, that the valentine was reproduced from. You can tell, especially when you hold it in your hands. If you buy a reproduction, thinking it\'s an antique, don\'t hesitate to return it. is very good about not making buyers keep things that aren\'t what they say they are.
