THIS IS A VERY FINELY CARVED REPRESENTATION OF CHRISTUS AM RAST OR JESUS CHRIST AT REST . IT DEPICTS CHRIST SEATED WITH HIS CROSS, WHICH IS A MOST UNUSUAL POSITION. IT WAS CARVED IN THE LATE 18TH CENTURY IN GERMANY, POSSIBLY OBERAMMERGAU . THE WOOD APPEARS TO BE CHESTNUT AND THE SCULPTURE MAINTAINS ITS ORIGINAL POLYCHROMING . FOR ITS AGE THE PIECE IS IN GOOD SHAPE (SEE PICTURES) . THE SCULPTURE IS SIGNED IAS.
