For sale is a knife with the handle made by Chantilly around 1740. It is made of softpaste porcelain and is painted in the Kakiemon style derived from earlier Japanese designs. The colors and design are superb! The colors are unlike any other ones I have ever seen on porcelain which is why they are so famous (and not exactly cheap). The design is completely outlined in black which is important for them to be the real deal. The metal blade is marked with an impressed mark of a crown over the letter E (likely the maker's mark of the blacksmith) as well as GAVET COU. DU ROI. which is the mark of Jean Gavet (he died in 1777) who had a store in Paris at 138 Rue Saint Honoré . The knife is amazingly complete with the blade which isn't that common. The handle has suffered a crack that goes through the center all the way around and a piece is missing of the porcelain in the same area. The blade is in great shape. The knife is 9.625 inches long of which the visible part of the porcelain handle being about 3.375 inches long.
