Antique1930s era hand-painted lacquer box from the Russian village ofMstera. The box depicts scenes from the Russian fairy tale “TheLittle Humpbacked Pony”. It is signed in Cyrillic on the bottomleft of the lid with the village name “Mstera” and on the bottomright with the artist\'s signature “Shilov”. The title of the work“Humpbacked Pony” is across the top. All are visible in thephotos.

FiodorShilov was born in Koroby of the Vladimir region in 1915. He became amember of the Proletarian Art Artel in 1931, and joined the USSRUnion of Artists in 1940. He worked among the leading artists ofMstera. He became a member of the USSR Union of Artists.

The box is showing wearcommensurate to its age. There is extensive craqueleur and there areseveral tiny chips in the painting. There is missing lacquer on theinside lid. The box measures approximately 4 1/8 inches long, 3 1/8inches wide and 1 1/8 inches tall.
