Antique Crazy Quilt Tumbling Blocks Dated 1883 Newport RI Painted & Embroidered:

This antique crazy quilt is one of the most beautiful and intricately embroidered pieces that I have personally seen. There is so much going on here- some highlights include an embroidered panel of a vase, a matador, a women wearing a bonnet, a handful of beautiful bugs, multiple detailed floral panels, insects, butterflies, and so much more!

This quilt is dated 1882. Victorian era / gilded age.

The quilt measures 68” X 59”

I’m seeing mostly silk/satin and velvet fabrics.

There is a ribbon from Newport Rhode Island dated 1859. I’m assuming it was made in Rhode Island

Thin cotton batting

There are 5 painted panels, 2 are flowers, a bird, a boy with a drum, and 2 birds with a water pump. They are all very faded and can really only make them out under close inspection

Overall fair/good condition for a silk crazy quilt of its age. Like most other extant period crazy quilts, there is shattering of the silk throughout the entire quilt. The backside has taken quite a bit of damage and has some big stains. The silk material on the backing is quite brittle, you can throw it around and it’s fine but if you tug on it, it will rip. The frontside is quite clean for a crazy quilt. I like that this is a lighter weight crazy quilt, no foul or mildew odors. This quilt is 140 years old
