Wonderful, and large, bookends depicting a seated Pharaoh with a book in her lap. I think a papyrus scroll would have been more accurate. She is Hatshepsut, queen of the 18th Dynasty from 1503 to her death is 1482, BC.The design is titled, "History," per a Kathodion Bronze Works catalogue. See last pic.
Bronze-clad (electro-formed), a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Kathodion Bronze Works, operating in NYC in the 19-teens. KBW went out of business before 1920 so these are more than 100 years old.
And in almost perfect condition. No breaks in the cladding. Minimal nicks / dings. No mashed corners on the bases. Finish is great, does show some minor wear and chipping from age and use. PLEASE KNOW: camera flash makes the colors appear brighter than they do in natural light. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
These are BIG: 10 1/2 inches tall; base is 4 3/8 inches X4 1/2 inches. Combined weight is 8 1/2 pounds.
