Very rare antique German carving of the Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus, who reaches for the grapes in her hand. This beautiful statuette is 5 3/4 inches high and dates to the end of the 19th century, possibly from the Oberammergau region in Germany. There is a beautiful, rich tone to the wood, and it is in excellent antique condition, with no perceptible flaws. Unsigned, but features the remnants of a sticker that said “München” from the antique store where it was bought. Remarkably detailed, the Virgin looks serene while Baby Jesus looks sweet and playful.
