This listing is for an antique museum-quality cast pewter Jewish wedding or marriage plate with a raised design in the center based on the painting "The Wedding" (Die Trauung) by Moritz Daniel Oppenheim from 1860.This wedding scene took place in the courtyard of the old synagogue in the Frankfurt, Germany Ghetto. Just above the bride and groom is a small Star of David (Magen David).
Around the outer edge on the top half of the plate is the Hebrew prayer "ב׳ א׳ ד׳ משמח החתן עם הכלה" which means in English "Blessed are You, Lord our God, who makes happy the groom with the bride". In Hebrew, the letters "Bet Aleph Dalet" (ב׳ א׳ ד׳) are used to stand for "Baruch Atah Adonai".The rim of the plate is beaded.
This cast pewter plate most likely dates to the late 1800s and was most likely made in Germany. This plate measures 9 13/16" across and weighs 1.30 pounds. The back of the plate has on label on the back held on by tape. It reads "Pewter Ceremonial Plate - With the help of God, bringing joy to the bridegroom with his bride".
The original painting is now in the collection of the Jewish Museum on 5th Avenue in New York City. From a description of the original painting:Under the Chupah the couple stands, their heads covered with a single prayer shawl. The ring, a symbol of holy union, is held by the groom. The rabbi reads and the groom repeats "With this ring art thou consecrated unto me according to the laws of Moses and of Israel. The pious father and the beaming mother, the merrymaker in his harlequin jacket, entertaining the crowd, the musician, the wine held in readiness, all are typical of such a scene which is being enacted in the open. Please feel free to ask any questions.
