Amazing antique 19th century c1840s/1850s hand blown glass medicine/pharmacy/Rx bottle with handwritten label in period ink which reads Elixir Gentian Glycerinated. My research shows that there was much early dispute amongst the medical community of this elixir with several doctors standing behind it and several staring it was proposterous and simply a combination of various medicines and not an elixir at all!
This bottle is stunning with an amazing sharp open pontil at the base and wavy rings forming the cylinder showing each expansion in the process of making the bottle. Filled with small bubbles and gentle imperfections. Comes with lid which fits snug however I am unsure if it is original to the bottle or not and does appear to be cast. Regardless, it is a perfect match for it. Inner lip of bottle and stem of lid are frosted. No makers mark or signature that I can note. A unique shape with it not being a perfect cylinder but in fact being narrower at the base then it is at the top giving in the very subtle appearance of ovoid. Beautiful and brilliant!
In Excellent overall condition. No damage! Free of chips, cracks or damage of any kind! A museum quality specimen. Displays brilliantly!
Measures 10” tall with lid. Base is 3 1/2” in diameter and top cylinder is 3 3/4” in diameter.
